Version 4.x – Isolated Web App (IWA)

Installation in Google Workspace Admin console

  1. Go to the Users & browsers tab in Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions. Select a desired organizational unit.
  2. Click the yellow floating add (+) button, then “Add an Isolated Web App” button (square in a square icon). This will open a dialog for you to enter Web bundle ID and update manifest URL. Web bundle ID for the app is q2oy25prsvhmxocjxs2badhyi3uw7vqhrupfn66iflserug4st6qaaic, update manifest URL is https://public.xtralogic.com/xtrchromerd-update-manifest.json(Note that the manifest URL was recently changed).
  3. After the app is added, set its “Installation policy” to “Force install”.
  4. Click the “SAVE” button.

To configure app version 4.x using JSON in the Google Admin console, you must install an additional extension. For details, refer to the “App configuration on managed Chrome devices” guide.

Individual installation

In order to install an IWA app individually, some Chrome flags need to be enabled.

  1. If the device is un-managed (not enrolled into Google Workspace), type chrome://flags/#enable-isolated-web-app-unmanaged-install in the browser address bar and select “Enabled” for the “Enable Isolated Web App unmanaged installation” flag.
  2. Type chrome://flags/#enable-isolated-web-app-dev-mode in the browser address bar and select “Enabled” for the “Enable Isolated Web App Developer Mode” flag.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Now, after the flags are set, type chrome://web-app-internals/ in the browser address bar and install the app using “Install IWA from Update Manifest” option. Use the following update manifest URL: https://public.xtralogic.com/xtrchromerd-update-manifest.json(Note that the manifest URL was recently changed). Select the latest version.

Permissions and Chrome flags

Local network permission is required.

For multi-monitor mode, Pop-ups and redirection, Window management and Automatic full screen permissions are required.

Clipboard and Advanced printer features permissions are required, if the corresponding feature is enabled in connection settings.

Whenever possible, if a permission is required for a feature, a user will be shown a permission notification dialog, notable exceptions to that are Pop-ups and redirection and Automatic full screen permission, which need to be set manually or in the Google Workspace Admin console.

For managed devices, permissions can also be set globally in the Google Workspace Admin console.

If using “Maximized window” in connection settings, enable the chrome://flags/#enable-desktop-pwas-additional-windowing-controls flag.

Updates

The app is using a channel-based update system:

  • stable: This is the recommended channel for most users.
  • beta: This channel offers early access to upcoming features and improvements that are nearly complete. It is generally reliable but may contain minor bugs that we are still ironing out. In most cases a version published in beta channel will be published on a stable channel within a week or two.
  • dev: Designed for testing our newest, experimental updates. This channel updates frequently and is best suited for advanced users or IT administrators who want to preview what is coming next, as it can occasionally be unstable.

Automatic App Updates via Google Workspace

By default, the app updates automatically using the stable update channel. To ensure compatibility with the future updates, we highly recommend moving a small group of test devices into a separate organizational unit (OU) with custom update channel set to beta. This allows you to test upcoming releases before they are deployed organization-wide. To further control the release cycle in the main OU, you can pin the app to a custom version and advance the pinned version once it was tested in the beta channel.

How to Manage Isolated Web App (IWA) Versions in Google Workspace

Updates for Individually Installed App

When you install the app using “Install IWA from Update Manifest” option in  chrome://web-app-internals/, you are offered a full set of available versions, from all update channels.

After the initial installation the app has to be updated manually, by visiting chrome://web-app-internals/. By default, the update is pulled from the stable channel. You can switch the update channel to beta or dev if necessary.

Version 3.x – Chrome App using Native Client (NaCl)

Legacy Chrome app, still available for installation in the Chrome Web Store. Please note, that the NaCl technology as well as Chrome apps itself are getting deprecated by Google. More information on the deprecation.
